Review :
Although others have written about Morgan Edwards in recent years, this book by Howard R. Stewart breaks some new ground. While attempting to exhaust all known sources here in America, Stewart has also done important new work with British sources. Forthe first time ever, Morgan Edwards has been discussed against the backdrop of his total context, both American and British. Baptist and/or Colonial scholars are richer for Stewart's labors. This biography of the Rev. Morgan Edwards makes a notable contribution to our understanding of early Baptists in America. His prodigious research has not only recovered long-forgotten information, but has corrected previous legends and misinformation. The result is a fascinating story of Morgan Edwards and his role as a shaper of the faith and practice of Baptists in America. ...an extremely valuable study of one of the most important personalities that has ever appeared on the American Baptist stage. Stewart's herculean effort helps solve many of the mysteries surrounding Edwards and provides reasonable answers to many ofthe long standing unanswered questions about him. The important contribution that Howard R. Stewart makes to understanding the enigma that was Morgan Edwards is to set him in his Welsh background and seek to explain something of eighteenth century Welsh life and culture.... Howard Stewart's detailed examination of Edwards's life does lift the veil a little more to a better understanding of this Welsh American Baptist. The important contribution that Howard R.
