Now that you have that wonderful collection of your town founder's letters and papers, what are you going to do with them? What steps would an archivist take to organize them and make them available to researchers? In this newly updated edition of Organizing Archival Records you will find what you need to know. David Carmicheal offers step-by-step guidance to understanding the purpose of organization and the essentials of how to do it. He covers the basic terms and theory of organization, and how to avoid some common pitfalls. Real-world examples, exercises, sample forms, and step-by-step directions allow you to apply what you have learned to organizing your own archival materials in a professional manner. An excellent resource for both computerized and manual organization and recordkeeping.

About the Author :
David W. Carmicheal is the director of the Georgia Department of Archives and History. Prior to joining the Georgia Archives he established the Westchester County (NY) Archives and was Director of the Records and Archives Center for 16 years. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in History and English from Asbury College and his Master of Arts in History and Archives from Western Michigan University. Mr. Carmicheal began developing workshops for small archives and avocational archivists in 1986. Organizing Archival Records grew out of those efforts.

Review :
Will help small institutions address the organization of their archives in a safe manner. In return, researchers will then be able to access these documents and unearth histories we haven't yet heard. Muse Step by step, Carmicheal discusses in clear, simple terms the purpose of records organization, its various levels ranging from the general (collection) to the specific (item or folder title), and the steps needed to achieve collection organization. Practical examples with exercises and answers help to illustrate concepts, and a bibliography including titles with more extensive information round out this concise and very useful resource.
