About the Book

Graphic novels are a popular new way to tell all kinds of stories. Topics in these book-length comics range from exciting adventure stories to compelling scientific and historical topics. This book will help you keep the big picture in sight as your graphic novel takes shape.

Review :
Following along the lines of other titles in the Write Your Own series, Rosinsky offers a mix of encouragement and general advice for young writers while laying out a systematic course of work. Though most of what she suggests can be found in any good writing manual, she does briefly discuss such genre-specific topics as using storyboards, keeping text extra-pithy, and working together with an illustrator. The pages are laced with references to familiar graphic novels, from the Babymouse series to Persepolis (2003) and illustrated with both published examples of artwork and photos of teen and preteen writers at work. This guide may get some would-be authors started--though because of its special focus on written narrative, it would be best paired with a more illustration-oriented guide, such as Christopher Hart's Manga Mania (2000).-- "Booklist" This colorful guide takes aspiring authors step by step from simply writing, to the publication options. Instructions are detailed and easy to follow. They include color coded boxes for case studies, tips and techniques, author quotes, and "now it's your turn" writing exercises. I will definitely look for additional titles in the Write Your Own series. A glossary, further reading, and an index are included.-- "Pennsylvania School Librarians Association" Well written, organized and illustrated, this how-to manual brings the writer's craft and the world of graphic novels to life. The huge task of writing a graphic novel is simplified, but adequately explained in this visually interesting, highly entertaining manual from an experienced author of over 100 books. The clear steps of writing a graphic novel are enhanced with examples from several well-know graphic novels, and real-life case studies of famous writers, illustrators and film makers, including Avi and Miyazaki. This is wonderful book that is a must-have for any aspiring middle school graphic novelist.-- "Pennsylvania School Librarians Association" While it is likely that each of these titles will attract a distinct audience, some of the information is repeated and applies to the writing craft in general. Both books make suggestions for selecting a topic, creating a positive work environment, editing, and submitting work for publication. Article writers will take away excellent advice on how to conduct an interview, develop powerful lead sentences, and adhere to the rule of objectivity while maintaining one's writer's voice. However, Gilbert merely mentions blogs and Web sites without balancing these journalistic avenues with traditional print counterparts. In some instances identical text is used. Both authors state: "Even famous writers sometimes get stuck for words and ideas. This is called writer's block." Repetition aside, there is much useful information provided. Students wishing to explore the graphic-novel format will benefit from clear explanations of how to portray heroes and villains, use dramatic dialogue, and create a story map. Excerpts from several popular graphic novels are included. Both books have full-color photos, graphics, and tinted text boxes on nearly every page. Solid selections for aspiring writers.-- "School Library Journal" Write Your Own Article is aimed at students who want to try writing news and feature articles but do not know how to start. The text leads the reader through the process, from getting started through viewpoint, story development, and more until the finished article is ready to be published. Novices can learn from experienced reporters through both examples of printed articles and interviews with writers. Similarly Write You Own Graphic Novel moves from idea to publication, with stops at synopsis, plots, and characters. The reader is taught to tie in the written word with the illustrations and to use language and font with visual impact. The series uses small segments of text, many graphics, and pull-out boxes to offer multiple points of entry. A time line stretches across the bottom of every page to chart the young writer's progress. Although the separation into so many segments prevents the reader from feeling daunted by the text, it can also prevent the authors from providing in-depth information on any one aspect. Their message is strengthened through the use of advice and examples from published writers. The reading lists offer examples of published works as well as other titles in the Write Your Own series, which also covers autobiography, biography, and fairy tales among other types of work. More helpful are the password-accessible online resources and the glossaries. Although anyone with experience will be ready for a more in-depth resource, these are great books for the young beginner.-- "VOYA"
