About the Book

In the summer of 1894, employees of Pullman Palace Car Company near Chicago decided they were fed up with their work conditions, including reduced wages. The laborers went on strike, refusing to go to work. Railroad workers from across the country joined the strike to show their support. This action shut down the railroads across the Midwest and beyond. The Pullman Strike helped some business and government leaders see that workers' concerns were important and deserved to be addressed.

Review :
George Pullman was a man of genius. Over time his intelligence and inventiveness led him to an extremely successful career in the area of railroad coach construction. In a radical move, Pullman set out to establish a worker's town where the factories that produced his famous railroad cars, and all related facilities necessary to maintain a workforce, could exist side by side. However, and in short order, life in the town that bore Pullman's name, soon turned ugly. Rising costs for workers, limited earning potential, and the drudgery of unending work all led to the development of labor unions designed to support the needs of Pullman's workforce. This evolution led to direct conflict between labor and management in the form of the Pullman Strike of 1894. Michael Burgan, a noteworthy writer for children and adolescents, tackles this topic in his most recent work. As part of the illustrated "We the People" series, The Pullman Strike of 1894 addresses a critical element of American history in a competent and enlightening manner. Burgan's well researched and capably written text is supported by numerous period illustrations and photographs. This combination offers readers an informative approach that will not only help them to better understand a critical step in labor history but also to see the evolution of the American workforce that persists to this day. As such Michael Burgan's look back at the Pullman Strike is cogent and affords youngsters historical writing of an approachable nature.-- "Children's Literature" In the summer of 1894, employees of Pullman Palace Car Company near Chicago decided they were fed up with their work conditions, including reduced wages.
