About the Book

Provides an explanation of how light works, including how it bounces or reflects, how it bends or refracts, and how light gets absorbed. Also discusses mirrors, telescopes, and colors.

Review :
Darlene Stille has written a new series of elementary reference books that include the following titles: Chemical Change: From Fireworks to Rust, Manipulating Light: Reflection, Refraction, and Absorption, Physical Change: Reshaping Matter, and Waves: Energy on the Move. The series is hardbound and destined for the children's reference section of a local library. Each book is well written, contains colorful images, and has simple and accurate explanations. Diagrams reinforce and illustrate the scientific processes. For example, in Checmical Change, a nice diagram explaining how paper ignites is illustrateed with molecules moving apart (pg. 29). Manipulating Light has an example modeling the difference between light striking a smooth surface and light striking a rough surface. The author has done her homework to select vivid images: Einstein, Mendeleev, a crowd performing a "human wave," drops of water hanging from a strand of hay, and even a Moroccan brass door knocker. Some of the images are particularly apt, such as the mauve silk dress from 1862 dyed with the first synthetic dye (Chemical Change pg. 38). Each book has a glossary, additional library references, related Web sites, and a list of museums to visit. Still is not breaking new ground with this series; rather, she has updated popular science topics with current information and applications using clear text and graphics. The series belongs on the shelf at the library and would enrich any upper elementary school teacher's physical science classroom collection as well.-- "Science Books & Films" Each of these slim titles provides a straightforward and clear discussion of its topic. In all of the volumes, the print is quite small, but the explanations are thorough. The first book examines how light behaves, the law of reflection, mirrors, refraction, and absorption. The second one discusses physical change and molecules; the changing states of matter; mixing and separating solids, liquids, and gases; and physical change in nature. In the last title, readers learn about water, sound, light, radio, and earthquake waves. In all, the author makes use of "Did You Know?" boxes to highlight additional facts. Full-color photographs, illustrations, or diagrams appear on almost every page, accompanied by captions that complement the text. The open layout and brevity of these titles will appeal to students.-- "School Library Journal"
