About the Book

A biography outlining the life of Francisco Vasquez de Coronado, the Spaniard who led an expedition and exploration through the American Southwest.

Review :
Another of the new "Exploring the World" series, Coronado portends useful books to follow. Francisco Coronado is set within the world of New Spain--now Mexico--which had been under Spanish colonial control since Cort's vanquished the Aztecs in 1521. While Spain sent priests with its conquerors, its mission was never more than pillaging the wealth of new lands. Within this context, it is fascinating to follow Coronado's two-year journey north in search of the fabled cities of gold. The text is informative and written to its age group, and it is joined by handsomely reproduced graphics and photographs, as well as the usual back matter of glossary, index, and so forth. The result is a new book recommended for use in lower school social studies units.-- "Children's Literature" Each of the four titles in this series is lavishly decorated with photographs, maps, and illustrations. The graphics mix the old with the new, juxtaposing historic drawings with modern photography, and illustrations are featured on nearly every page. This, combined with the volumes' short chapters, will make these books attractive to elementary readers, as well as teachers. The series' readable narratives present the basic facts of each explorer's major goals and accomplishments, as well as interesting tidbits of information about each man. Each book also examines the relationships between explorer and natives, unabashedly discussing Europeans' mistreatment of indigenous populations. The series is generally more appealing and accessible than the Explorers and Exploration series (Steadwell Books, 2000) which was reviewed in the September/October 2000 issue of LIBRARY TALK. Bibliographies (including lists of books, Web sites, and organizations); time lines of important dates; lists of important people. Recommended.-- "Library Talk"
