About the Book

This is the ultimate guide to working with wood, from getting started to advanced levels. All the key techniques and applications are explained, such as sanding and laminating, making simple and advanced joints, staining, picture framing, carving, basic furniture repair and restoration, and home maintenance tasks. It features 200 techniques and projects, including over 30 full-scale constructions shown step-by-step, such as a stylish bookcase, an elegant corner cabinet and a traditional storage chest, all shown in simple and straightforward instructions to help you achieve great results. The appeal of wood is timeless and working with this natural resource is one of the most pleasing and satisfying of occupations. This practical manual will help you master the basic techniques of woodworking and provides a solid foundation on which to build skills and knowledge. Essential advice on getting started is given, including the initial steps of planning a workshop, the principles of design and ergonomics, and the basic rules used in construction. There is a directory of all the tools and materials required to make and restore wood, and detailed lessons on how to use them, from saws and measuring devices, to turning tools and power tools. Over 30 full-length practical projects will help develop your new skills while creating beautiful and usable pieces of furniture, including a simple and quick-to-make magazine rack, a classic mirror frame, and a smart low ash table.
