About the Book

Ongoing research shows that whilst 90 per cent of large companies are conducting global projects to take advantage of distributed skills, around-the-clock operations and virtual team environments, less than one third of them have effective, established practices to help project managers and team members working over a distance. As a consequence, most organisations struggle to reach the required levels of quality and effectiveness from these projects because their methods and practices are not adapted to a global multi-cultural environment, where most communication is in writing and asynchronous. Global Project Management describes how to adapt your organisation and your projects to thrive in this environment. The book goes beyond the recommendations on collaborative tools, to suggest the development of best practices on cross-cultural team management and global communication, recommend organisational changes and project structures, and propose alternatives for the implementation of the new practices and methods. The text is filled with real-life examples and techniques and illustrates how to apply the recommendations as part of the successful management of any global project.

Review :
Award: Project Management Institute - David I. Cleland Project Management Literature Award - 2008 'PMI is proud to award the PMI David I. Cleland Project Management Literature Award to Jean Binder, PMP, MBA in recognition of the book Global Project Management... Over the course of its 300 pages, the book never wavers from its commitment to providing a valuable framework of methods to be used for the benefit of global project outcomes.' 'What makes global projects succeed? Do you wonder why some generic projects are perfectly managed and delivered in some countries and not even understood in others when the project scope and communication were exactly the same? If you're looking for solid, easy-to-follow advice on cross-cultural collaboration, coaching over distance, global communication, organizations, tools and more, then this is the book for you! I have been managing projects for over 13 years, developing telecommunication solutions all over the world. Before even completing 3 chapters, I was entirely engrossed in this book as it was describing exactly what I experience and was clearly explaining why some projects fail and why some succeed. This book is definitely a must-have for any Project Management professional.' - Fabien Niget, Orange Business Services, Outsourcing Services Program Office, Switzerland 'With a refreshing sense of pragmatism, and a methodical approach of key concepts, Jean Binder cuts through the complexity of Global Project Management issues. This book deals with most of the situations I've had to face as a Global Project Manager, and gives easy-to-implement techniques and hints to solve issues and improve best practices. I'm sure you'll benefit from the time saved thanks to its effectiveness.' - Jacob Marchal, R&D Project Manager, Alcatel-Lucent 'For project professionals working on virtual or geographically dispersed projects, Global Project Management by Jean Binder will be a valuable reference. It could serve as a textbook for universities that offer programs in project management and wish to or have a course on the virtual and global environment...organized in an easy-to-read fashion...shows Binder's openness to new ideas and recognition of the changing nature of the project management profession.' - Project Management Journal '...[This book is] one of the few available texts in this domain with a PM focus and as such is makes a valuable contribution to PM practice with many diagrams, figures and tables which make it easy to pick up refer to and grasp overall appreciation of topics...I would certainly recommend that this book be ordered as a valuable reference for all university and corporate organisation libraries...This represents one of the pioneer books in an important area of focus for PM and so I am pleased to see this available to widen access to PM wisdom.' - Derek H.T. Walker, RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia (in International Journal of Managing Projects in Business)
