This book will appeal to those interested in the European Union, in EU external relations, gender issues, civil society, and development.

Review :
'Although the role of civil society has been given increased prominence in the formulation of the EU's external assistance programme, realising the potential of non-state actors has proved problematic. Similarly the importance of women in the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals of poverty reduction has been recognised but not reflected in the implementation of EU development policy. This book charts the evolution of these policies and provides a critical assessment, as well as outlining the way forward. It will make an important contribution to this debate.' Stephen Dearden, Manchester Metropolitan University, UK '…provides an interesting addition to the existing literature and public debates, because it investigates two issues – gender and civil society – that are considered as cross-cutting in the framework of the EU development policy and external relations…the broad-reaching character of the book makes it highly recommended reading for both scholars and practitioners interested in investigating and evaluating the role of the EU in the world.'
