About the Book

Dealing with the controversial aspect of modernity, this volume concerns itself with the "transformation" of modernity. The book attempts to answer the question of whether or not there can still be a distinction between the traditional and the modern. Some studies claim that the classic distinction can no longer grasp the particularity of the contemporary social situation, and argue that we need new concepts and theories which help to go "beyond" modernity. Others talk of a transformation of social institutions and cultural beliefs within modernity, while another, third, party defends the classic distinction, claiming that it is sound enough to enable us to understand modern social life. This volume discusses all three aprroaches.
