About the Book

An examination of globalization and marginality in geographical space. It discusses the issue of marginalization and the effects that economic globalization have on marginal and critical regions from the point of view of politics and policies and the shift from economic to social issues of development. The aim of the book is to provide an overview of the globalization issues, and yet keep a close connection to practical examples of what, where and how globalization and deregulation effect marginal areas. The book is divided into four main parts, which address: effects of globalization; policies and politics of change; from economic to social issues; and summary and conclusions.

Table of Contents:
Part 1 Effects of globalization: globalization, deregulation, marginalization - where are we at the end of the millennium, Walter Leimgruber; globalization and economic marginalization - north-south differences, Lawrence M. Sommers, Assefa Mehretu and Bruce W.M. Pigozzi; Great Plains settlement - globalization and deregulation, J. Clark Archer and Richard E. Lonsdale; southern Patagonia facing globalization, Maria Eugenia Cepparo de Grosso; managing integration and marginalization for the new Europe, Henri Goverde. Part 2 Policies and politics of change: northern dimension for the European Union - background and proposals, Toivo Muilu; rural northern Finland and EU membership, Matti Hakkila; the Tuscany observatory of rural development - a policy tool against spatial and information marginalization, Maria Andreoli et al; the deep rural context and micro-regional changes in southern Portugal, Luis Moreno; unforeseen regional effects as a result of corporatization of government administrative bodies, Paul Olav Berg; consequences of regulation and deregulation in marginal and critical economies of the US Pacific Northwest, Steven Kale; deregulation and marginality - new public policies and new approaches to the planning of tourism, Francisco Lopez-Palomeque. Part 3 From economic to social issues. Part 4 Conclusions and summary.
