About the Book

Microscopic Life explores the tiny worlds that exist around us and even within us! Examine how some organisms help us fight diseases and others help to produce food. But bacteria can also be harmful, causing tooth decay, food poisoning, and many deadly epidemics. Students will be amazed at the vast range of microscopic life and at the close proximity in which they live to humans!

Review :
Dr. Judy Rowen - Children's Literature This book is both beautiful and horrifying. The light and electron micrographs of organisms from bacteria to fungi to tiny crustaceans reveal their diversity and beauty, while also magnifying how incredibly outnumbered we are on this earth. I shuddered at the scanning electron micrograph of "Demodex" mites that live inside everyone's eyelash follicles but could not help admiring the colorized micrograph of the organism that causes sleeping sickness floating between red blood cells. The text is very clearly written: for example, it tries to give the reader a concept of the scope of sizes included in the microscopic world. Viruses are approximately 10,000 times smaller than the mites, but a mite is about the size of the tip of a sewing needle. Topics reviewed include the different types of organisms, their role in disease and natural cycles, and their ability to live in extreme environments. The book is divided into three chapters: "Micro Life Revealed," "Microscopic Organisms," and "Inside the Microworld." Each chapter is supported with illustrations, and ends with a summary, a suggestion of web sites to visit, possible careers related to the subject matter, and a list of museums and exhibits related to the topic. A glossary and an index are also included. This is part of the "Kingfisher Knowledge" series. 2004, Kingfisher/Houghton Mifflin, Ages 12 to Adult.
