About the Book

Solar System is the perfect introduction for young readers to the endlessly fascinating topic of space and the vast, mysterious worlds that make up our solar system. Discover the activity of the flaming prominences of the sun and the bubbling volcanoes of Venus. Examine the apparently lifeless craters on the moon, Saturn's swirling rings, and giant Jupiter's great red spot. Marvel at space travelers such as the comet Halle-Bopp, mighty meteorites, and the Spirit and Viking space probes on their missions to Mars. Budding astronomers will be intrigued and enthralled by the strange and diverse worlds that make up our solar system.

Planet Earth is one of nine planets in our Solar System. The Sun is the center of our Solar System. The Sun's gravity holds the planets in their orbits. Mercury, Venus, and Mars are the planets in our Solar System closest to the Earth. In some ways they are similar to the Earth, but in many important ways they are different. Mercury is the closest to the Sun. It gets very hot during the day and very cold at night without the direct rays of the Sun. Venus has enormous volcanoes and lots of clouds that trap the Sun's heat. Mars is red and has two small moons. Jupiter is the largest planet, about 1300 times larger than the Earth. Saturn's rings have made many feel it is the most beautiful planet in the Solar System. Space probes have been sent to Saturn to study the planet. Moving past Saturn, the next planet is cold Uranus. Neptune is the stormiest planet, with winds that blow three times faster than a hurricane. Large text, photographs and photo realistic illustrations will keep young students engaged. This book is part of the "Kingfisher Young Knowledge" series. 2004, Kingfisher Publications, Ages 5 to 8.

K-Gr 3-Striking, full-color photographs serve as text backgrounds in these highly visual and appealing titles. Each book has two-page chapters and concludes with easy-to-make projects. Solar System offers interesting details about the planets as well as asteroids, comets, and meteoroids. The second title provides an introduction to the five senses and the parts of the human body that are responsible for each one, and includes material about members of the animal kingdom such as bears, moles, and fish. The lasttitle describes camouflage and how such animals as the leaf-tailed gecko and sloth use it. Considering the target age group, the print is occasionally difficult to read when placed on a darker background, and the glossary words, located at the bottom of the pages, don't include pronunciation guides. However, all three books are well written and have large-size fonts. Students will enjoy browsing through them.-Shauna Yusko, St. Monica School, Mercer Island, WA Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
