About the Book

An extended family gathers in late August to celebrate the seventy-fifth birthday of its formidable matriarch, Leonora. She is the daughter of the famous Edwardian painter Ethan Walsh, whose paintings are kept at the family home, Willow Court in Wiltshire. At Leonora's house party will be her daughters, Gwen and Rilla, whom she raised alone after she was widowed in her late twenties; Rilla's stepdaughter Beth; and Gwen's husband and three children with their spouses and lovers. One outsider joins the group: Sean Everard, a TV director who's making a documentary about the life and work of Ethan Walsh.

All families have their dark side and Leonora's is no exception. By the time the marquee is dismantled and the guests have gone their seperate ways, two shocking past events have come to light, rocking complacency and changing forever the lives of Leonora and her daughters.

Review :
Adele has been interviewed for WRITING MAGAZINE, CITY LIFE, and for the 'My Best Teacher' feature in TES and DAILY MAIL 'What Book?'. She was interviewed by R4 WOMAN'S HOUR and by Paul Blezzard of ONE WORD RADIO 'Between the Lines'. BBC CAMBS made it 'Book of the Week' and BBC WILTSHIRE and BBC KENT reviewed PN interviewed Adele from LBF 2002 and she contributed to BOOKSELLER Summer Reads 2003. 'The evident enjoyment and ease with which the author manipulates her material will give a lot of pleasure. Sympathetic and experienced, she knows just how to balance character with story and how to lure readers into her web' Elizabeth Buchan, SUNDAY TIMES 'Thankfully, Geras has not seen fit to jettison the techniques matersted in years of writing for a more demanding young audience. Plot and moral message ring crystal clear, and her adult characters, like teenage protagonists, feel the need to come of age; although they grow and change by grasping the nature of the past rather than by figuring out the present' Helen Falconer, THE GUARDIAN 'Glorious family story which takes place in the setting of an English country house in the lazy heat of late summer' HELLO 'An enjoyable and entertaining read from an accomplished storyteller' TIME OUT LONDON 'A wonderful story full of enchantment. I think it will sell like hot cakes' Tim Manderson, PUBLISHING NEWS 'Secrets and revelations are the order of the day in this gripping novel. ...You'll be hooked from the start, and when you've finished, you'll wish you hadn't' **** COMPANY 'Long-hidden secrets and passions come tumbling from the closet, changing the way family members perceive themselves and others. Geras assuredly draws the reader into this deeply involving grade A saga, which has a grip that's impossible to shake off' Fanny Blake, WOMAN & HOME 'A dramatic family epic that takes her out of the children's section and firmly into 'grown-up' fiction...The book's appeal is partly in this twisting storyline and partly in the shameless escapism of the milieu. In contrast to the darker elements of the narrative, the setting is classic Jilly Cooper - constant sunshine, a beautiful house and garden, enviable clothes and delicious food served at every opportunity' CITY LIFE 'It is a hugely enjoyable read, the perfect accompaniment to lazing in a bubble bath after a hard day at the office. If you like Wesley and Howard, or Binchy and Pilcher, you will love this book. Geras's publishers faith is right - this is about as good as popular fiction gets' THE SCOTSMAN 'Wonderfully evocative...beautifully crafted, it's a story to become immersed in' CHOICE 'Giving Rosamunde Pilcher's "The Shell Seekers" a run for its money...Her's are characters you cannot fail to care about' JEWISH CHRONICLE 'Adele Geras combines wonderful insight with some dark undertones' YOURS SUMMER SPECIAL 'This is an enthralling and beautifully writen mystery which maintains the sense of suspense through each spellbinding page. Exciting and moving in equal measure, it is destined to become a classic' GOOD BOOK GUIDE 'This is a beautiful chiaroscuro of a novel, filled with truly artistic detail and a well paced interwoven plot' ARMADILLO 'If you are looking for the perfect holiday read to keep you entranced for days, then this book is your best bet' JEWISH TELEGRAPH CITY LIFE - listed Waterstones launch and Borders Stockport event METRO NORTH - Q&A with Sophie Hannah & Adele Geras
