About the Book

Security: A Guide to Security System Design and Equipment Selection and Installation, Second Edition, aims to provide much of the essential information needed for the intelligent, careful design, selection, purchase, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of common security systems. It aims to demystify the ""black art"" and ""black box"" approach to security systems and their components by explaining in plain English what these systems do and don't do. It also seeks to arm the potential designer, purchaser, and system user with enough product knowledge to be able to quickly identify available options and to ask sensible questions of those persons trying to sell systems or services. The book begins by explaining the design, selection, installation, inspection, testing, and commissioning of security systems. This is followed by separate chapters on security devices such as sensors for external and internal use; closed circuit television (CCTV) systems; locks for doors and windows; access control systems; and security lighting systems. For each device, the principles of operation; equipment types and selection; primary uses to which the device is put; application of the device; and limitations, advantages, and disadvantages are discussed.
