About the Book

This pack offers a unique interactive learning experience for engineering students with a typical school maths background (e.g. intermediate tier GCSE), and is ideally suited as part of a level 2 course, such as Intermediate GNVQ, L2 NVQ, City & Guilds. Unlike numerous GCSE and A-level revision CD-ROMs this material has been written by a highly experienced engineering lecturer, and one of the UK's leading engineering mathematics authors. The heart of the pack is two CD-ROMs produced by Matrix Multimedia: Number 1 and Algebra 1. These include a wealth of practice and revision material, including the scope to enter and solve your own problems. A series of Virtual Laboratory features encourage student-centred maths exploration and learning, which is ideal for integration into classroom teaching or for self-paced reinforcement or extension work. The CD-ROMs are provided with single-user institution licences. Multi-user licence versions are available from Butterworth-Heinemann. This material is suitable for use alongside any textbooks, but it complements John Bird's Basic Engineering Mathematics textbook especially well. The pack also includes the Basic Engineering Mathematics Instructor's Manual, with full worked solutions to the Assignments in the student book, which are designed to be used as tests or coursework. 10-User License Versions: Each license comes with an additional copy of the CD-ROM. To upgrade for more than 10 users simply buy additional versions. Number 1: 07506 5494 5 CD-ROM with 10-user license : GBP99 + VAT Algebra 2: 07506 5489 9 CD-ROM with 10-user license : GBP99 + VAT If you experience technical difficulties please e-mail support@matrixmultimedia.co.uk with the subject header 'technical support/John Bird CD-ROM/engineering mathematics' detailing your operating system and as much information as possible about the problem including the error message, if any.

Table of Contents:
Number 1: Basic Arithmetic; Decimals; Rounding; Fractions; Order of Precedence; Common Calculations; Percentages; Ratio; Proportion; Indices; Algebra 1: Basic skills; Laws of indices; Brackets and factors; Laws of precedence; Proportionality; Simple Equations; Instructor's Manual.

About the Author :
John Bird, the author of over 100 textbooks on engineering and mathematical subjects, is the former Head of Applied Electronics in the Faculty of Technology at Highbury College, Portsmouth, U.K. More recently, he has combined freelance lecturing at the University of Portsmouth, with technical writing and Chief Examiner responsibilities for City and Guilds Telecommunication Principles and Mathematics. John Bird is currently a Senior Instructional Officer at the School of Marine and Air Engineering at H.M.S. Sultan, Gosport, Hampshire, U.K. The school, which serves the Royal Navy, is one of Europe s largest engineering training establishments.

Review :
'A wonderful tool - saves a lot of board work... students can go back and forward to gain a real understanding of what they are doing - and why. Bill Hargreaves, Nelson and Colne College 'Impressed with quality and ease of use... a higher quality product than GCSE revision guides, worth the extra expense... much better than US competition... meets NVQ and Key Skills requirements... used as part of a course to get students up to a common level at the start of their engineering studies... easy to use stand-alone: don't have to have a teacher... good back-up to any books.' Mr Armstrong, Army Technical Foundation College 'Mathematical explanations clear... Virtual Laboratories where you can design your own questions are excellent, fun, and give clear explanations of how to solve a problem step-by-step... Worked examples good with matching questions...' Melanie Deans, Computational Methods lecturer, North Oxfordshire College
