About the Book

The history of surgery is closely linked with national and international conflict. Aid agencies and military medical services are increasingly involved with the surgical care of victims of war whether combatant or civilian. Yet, in any generation only a small percentage of surgeons are exposed to war situations and then only for a limited period. It is vital therefore that the experience gained by the International Committee of the Red Cross in this field of surgery is thoroughly documented. Seventy percent of all war wounded patients present with wounds of limbs. This book addresses the realities of managing limb wounds whether in the admission room, or on the operating table or in the ward. Written in a clear and didactic style with numerous clinical illustrations, "War Wounds of Limbs: Surgical Management" guides the surgeon through the understanding of war wounds and his role in their management, the complications and difficulties encountered and the successful rehabilitation of the patient. Although written primarily for the surgeon about to enter the field, many of the concepts of wound surgery and management discussed in the book will also be relevant to the civilian surgeon.
