About the Book

One of the most striking phenomena that can be observed in high-energy collisions of elementary particles is the production of highly collimated bunches of particles. These objects are known as hadronic jets. The word ‘hadronic’ refers to the fact that jets are made up of hadrons, particles which can interact through the strong force, the force that keeps atomic nuclei bound together. Hadronic jets are ubiquitous at high-energy colliders, such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the machine currently used to solve long-standing mysteries such as the origin of mass or the nature of dark matter. The book aims to provide a gentle introduction to the physics of hadronic jets to a student (undergraduate or postgraduate) willing to undertake a project on the topic. The second edition will update and significantly expand each chapter, increasing the length from 115 pages to ~150 pages. In addition, each chapter will be complemented by problems inviting the reader to explore the details of the presented topics.

Key Features

  • Accessible to undergraduate and postgraduate students
  • Provides a concise introduction to both QCD and jet physics
  • Enables the reader to access the relevant literature on the topic
  • Presents the most recent advances in the field
  • Each chapter contains problems and an extensive bibliography

Table of Contents:
1. Introduction This chapter presents a simple explanation to what jets are. It also contains a short introduction to elementary particle physics, to set the notation and the basic concepts for the rest of the book. The revised version will contain the most recent status of particle physics, including details of the current LHC setup. 2. Jet algorithms This chapter describes in detail how jets can be rigorously defined starting from the observed momenta in a high-energy collision. It also explains both theoretical and experimental issues of each jet algorithm. In the revised version, more emphasis will be given on collinear and infrared safety, and all drawings will be remade from scratch. The topics of jet areas and pile-up subtraction will be revised, and the most recent advances will be presented. Minimisation procedures for defining jets will be updated reflecting the development of the ideas sketched in the first edition. 3. QCD for jet physics This chapter presents QCD, the theory of strong interactions. This chapter presents the main theoretical methods to describe jets in QCD, namely fixed-order calculations, partonshower and resummation, as well as non-perturbative methods to describe hadronization corrections. In the revised version, the style of presentation will radically change. Each theoretical concept will be introduced by a fully worked-out example. The most recent advances in parton-shower algorithms, resummation and hadronization corrections will also be presented. 4. Jets as discovery tools This chapter is more advanced. It brings together the methods of chapters 2 and 3 to introduce to the most recent techniques that exploit jets to find new physics at colliders, especially at the LHC. In the revised version, a discussion on corrections to the jet mass will be added. Original substructure techniques will be critically revised in the light of the most recent advances. Experimental validations of substructure techniques now do exist, and will be presented. In the revised version, every chapter will be complemented by problems inviting the reader to explore the details of the presented topics.
