About the Author :
Having survived an earthquake, house fire and being bombed all before the age of 11, Leila Rasheed moved from Libya back to the UK. Leila has worked for a children's literacy charity and as a bookseller, and writes books for children and teenagers. She also runs Megaphone, a new writer development scheme for writers of colour, who want to write their first novel for children.

Review :
Bathsheba Clarice de Trop is the daughter of a superstar novelist mother. She enjoys a rarefied and pampered life in her large mansion with swimming pool. She tries to be normal, but she struggles to tell the difference between fact and fiction. The delusion is the result of her upbringing - her mother pays her little attention, substituting affection for material objects - and she desperately wants to be the Bathsheba character in her mother's books. In this second book by Leila Rasheed, our heroine moves in with her father while her mother swans off to Hollywood to seal a film deal. Her father is an ex-white collar criminal and lives in a small house on an estate; she is about to start her first day at an enormous inner city school and she is determined that she will make friends and be as popular as the fictional Bathsheba. But the reality is different for this lonely girl. Birmingham-born Rasheed is a delightful writer with an easy style. The reader empathises with young Bath; understanding her naivety, cringing at her mistakes and celebrating her achievements. A fun book for readers who aren't old enough yet to tackle Louise Rennison. ***** Betty Bookmark 5 star review The first day of school is never easy, especially if you are Bathsheba Clarice de Trop, with a super-starry reputation to live up to and used to home tutoring plus a pampered lifestyle. Now things are changing. She is very excited at the prospect of moving in with her ex-con dad, having lived in a mansion, with her famous pre-occupied mother. Her larger than life personality means it’s not easy for her to fit in – she is after all known as the hero in her mother’s exciting books. She starts an investigation to catch the thief of the school computers. Can she win herself some friends? The first story, Chips, Beans and Limousines, introduced this wonderful little character who is a cross between Milly Molly Mandy and a WAG. The second book, Socks, Shocks and Secrets, sees our heroine grow in stature and learn some valuable lessons in life… Humour is also the key to the success of the books, which have been described as ‘Louise Rennison without the snogging'. The second diary of Bathsheba Clarice de Trop (see review of Chips, Beans and Limousines in Flapjack Fun Spring 08) who is going to school for the first time in her life. Trying to live up to the heroine role she plays in all her mother’s books, Bathsheba sets out to catch the thief of the school computers – and hopefully win some friends at the same time. A weightier tone than the first book, (100 pages longer) Socks, Shocks and Secrets is just as funny and girls will race through it. Refreshingly free of any age-inappropriate ‘boy talk’ too!
