About the Book

In 2013, Edward Snowden revealed that the NSA and its partners had been engaging in warrantless mass surveillance, using the internet and cellphone data, and driven by fear of terrorism under the sign of ’security’. In this compelling account, surveillance expert David Lyon guides the reader through Snowden’s ongoing disclosures: the technological shifts involved, the steady rise of invisible monitoring of innocent citizens, the collusion of government agencies and for-profit companies and the implications for how we conceive of privacy in a democratic society infused by the lure of big data. Lyon discusses the distinct global reactions to Snowden and shows why some basic issues must be faced: how we frame surveillance, and the place of the human in a digital world. Surveillance after Snowden is crucial reading for anyone interested in politics, technology and society.

Review :
"Surveillance after Snowden is a brilliant plea for human beings to secure personal agency and civic rights in a world of metadata and surveillance. This won’t be easy, but it is among the most important challenges for the future of democracy." Craig Calhoun, Director, London School of Economics and Political Science "His work brilliantly demonstrates how surveillance is no longer implemented only by the state but extends its impact on our daily life through mundane places, commercial activites, work laces, leisure and travel." Ayse Alyzee Ceyhan, Sciences Po, Paris School of International Affairs "David Lyon’s new book on surveillance post Snowden builds on his indispensable body of work to understand the dangers of mass surveillance." Laura Poitras, Filmmaker and Journalist "Edward Snowden showed us how far the infrastructures of surveillance have extended. In turn, David Lyon gives us the deep scholarly context to understand what the documents really mean, and most importantly, how we can best respond. It's a much needed combination, and it makes this book essential reading." Kate Crawford, Visiting Professor at MIT and Principal Researcher at MSR "Ultimately this is a book that all students studying contemporary surveillance technologies should read. It provides an excellent overview of Snowden's revelations, offers keen sociological insights and calls for a change in surveillance attitudes and practices." Information, Communication & Society
