Transatlantic Governance in the Global Economy: (Governance in Europe Series)

Transatlantic trade and direct investment now surpasses two trillion dollars. US and EU officials increasingly contact each other to co-ordinate common actions and responses to conflicts over their respective domestic regulatory policies. This book examines the record of transatlantic economic relations in the 1990s, and in particular the efforts of the US and EU, through the New Atlantic Agenda, to establish new forms of governance to cope with increasing economic interdependence. The book explains the development of transatlantic co-operation that led to the multi-leveled governance mechanisms of the NTA. It assess questions about the nature of transatlantic governance, as reflected in competing international relations theories of intergovernmental, transgovernmental (technocratic) and transnational (civil society) relations. The study documents transatlantic relations through a mix of analytic and normative perspectives.
