About the Book

Brigadier General Malham M. Wakin, head of the philosophy department at the U.S. Air Force Academy for over thirty years, is one of the most esteemed military ethicists in the United States. This collection of essays—the first to be published together in a single volume—will be essential reading for anyone interested in the field of applied and theoretical ethics. Covering such diverse issues as war and morality, legal ethics, medical ethics, business ethics, conflict mediation, pacifism, just war theory, religion and war, and nuclear deterrance, Integrity First includes work that not only treats issues of longstanding historical significance, but also has relevance to any serious discussion of modern justice. This book represents an erudite and influential mind, and will be of special interest to students and academics both here and abroad.

Table of Contents:
Chapter 1 Dynamism and Discipline Chapter 2 On the Nature of Man Chapter 3 Egoism, Greed, and America's Future Chapter 4 Egoism as a Moral Theory Chapter 5 The Vocation of Arms Chapter 6 The American Military: Theirs to Reason Why Chapter 7 The Ethics of Leadership I Chapter 8 The Ethics of Leadership II Chapter 9 The Military: A Noble Profession Chapter 10 Wanted: Moral Virtues in the Military Chapter 11 Professional Integrity Chapter 12 Morality and War Chapter 13 God or Guns Chapter 14 Just War, Nuclear Deterrance, and the Strategic Defense Initiative Chapter 15 Applying Nuremberg Principles to Limited War Chapter 16 Humanitarian Intervention Chapter 17 Military and Societal Values: The Relevance of Knowing and Doing Chapter 18 Technology and Education: A Philosopher's Perspective Chapter 19 Teaching Philosophy at the United States Air Force Academy

About the Author :
Malham M. Wakin is Professor Emeritus, United States Air Force Academy. He is the author and editor of four books: War, Morality, and the Military Profession (1979), The Viet Cong Political Infrastructure (1968), Introduction to Symbolic Logic (1991), and The Teaching of Ethics in the Military (1982).

Review :
Integrity First is a thoughtful work by an officer who both preaches and practices the military virtues. . . . It is recommended reading for all officers—especially those who are a bit jaded. It is also recommended for anyone else both in and outside the military who is concerned about ethical standards as they might or might not be found in that often misunderstood institution. This fine collection puts [Wakin's] lifetime of insightful and persuasive work in one place. No one interested in issues of professional military ethics should be without this book.

A Thrilling But Totally Believable Murder Mystery

Read this in one evening. I had planned to do other things with my day, but it was impossible to put down. Every time I tried, I was drawn back to it in less than 5 minutes. I sobbed my eyes out the entire last 100 pages. Highly recommend!
