About the Book

Provides an introduction to Canada using a question-and-answer format that discusses land features, government, housing, transportation, industries, education, sports, art forms, holidays, food, and family life. Includes a map, facts, and charts.

Review :
These overviews cover the political, historical, geographic, and cultural basics of their respective countries. The texts are simple and reader-friendly and are heavily supported by photographs (both color and black and white), charts, graphs, and maps. Quite a bit of good information can be found here, delivered in a question-and-answer format in chapter spreads. In Canada, even the sport of curling gets a mention. These books provide almost identical coverage as the "A Visit to..." series (Heinemann Library) but manage to fall nicely between the reading levels of the "Welcome to" series (Gareth Stevens) and "The Countries" series (ABDO). Solid purchases.-- "School Library Journal" This 32-page picture book is in an easy-to-read format of questions and answers about the country of Canada. Author Olson offers twelve questions that are each answered on two pages, along with photographs, charts, and sidebars. For example, the first question, Where is Canada? elicits the location and size of Canada and its topography. There is also a clear map of Canada and a photograph of the St. Lawrence River. Some of the other questions answered include: What type of government does Canada have? What kind of housing does Canada have? What are Canada's forms of transportation? What is school like in Canada? Sports, art, culture, holidays and foods are also explored. An interesting illustration on family life in Canada shows the different ethnic backgrounds of people in Canada. Multiple origins make up 38% of the population while French and British each make up only 5%. Another interesting fact is that Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving in October. A glossary, further reading sources, and Internet sites are offered, as well as a list of popular French words such as au revoir for good-bye and s'il vous plait for please. Author Olson has written a clear, simple introduction to a country so close to America's borders.-- "Children's Literature Comprehensive Database"
