About the Book

"Mastering Kung Fu" provides readers with a path for taking kung fu training and combat skills to the next level. Based on Wing Chun kung fu, this book provides insight into the most advanced combat theories, skills, and tactics-as well as the history and evolution of traditional kung fu, that aims to give you the edge with your opponent. "Mastering Kung Fu" introduces these advanced theories that show you how science plays as much a role in kung fu as art: centerline theory; two lines of offense and defense; three reference points; five line (dimensional) theory; five phases of combat; six gates concept; Kiu sau (bridge arm) employment concepts; Chi sau (sticking hand) concepts. By understanding these principles, readers can see how space and time factor into successful, tactical maneuvers. Then, by combining these principles with detailed instruction on the subtleties of advanced techniques, readers should be able to add the concepts to your own arsenal to improve your combat skills, even if you are an established black belt. Readers will also find clear, concise flow charts that detail various combat situations, showing the different tactical options as well as the potential outcomes of executing those options.

Table of Contents:
Northern and southern Shaolin Kung Fu development; genesis of Shaolin Wing Chun and Hung Fa Yi history; beyond the southern Shaolin temple; philosophy and etiquette of Hung Fa Yi Wing Chun; the core of Hung Fa Yi science - space, time, and energy; the Wing Chun formula; Siu Nim Tau level science and skill development; Chum Kiu level knowledge and skill development; Biu Gee level knowledge and skill development; Hung Fa Yi wooden dummy and weapons.

About the Author :
Grandmaster Garrett Gee comes from a distinguished line of philosophers and martial and military teachers. He is the direct descendant in a family that has consistently studied and taught martial art disciplines for centuries to professional military officers and royal family members of China's greatest dynasties. Gee began his martial arts training at age five under his father, Grandmaster Peter Kim Ho Chu, and later received full training in Hung Fa Yi Wing Chun Kuen in China. He was the first disciple outside of the founding family to learn this martial science. Now the eighth-generation successor of Hung Fa Yi Wing Chun, he is the first to open the system outside of China or to the public. Gee has been teaching since his move to the United States in 1975. In January 2001, Gee was inducted into Action Martial Arts Publications Hall of Fame as Martial Artist of the Year in Chinese Martial Arts. An internationally renowned Wing Chun martial artist, instructor, and researcher, Benny Meng has devoted his life to martial arts. He has been featured by national news and major martial arts publications as one of the world's best martial artists. Meng has had the privilege of training under some of the great grandmasters in the world for judo, taekwondo, and various styles of Wing Chun kung fu. He began his Wing Chun training in 1982 and officially started teaching it in 1987. Since then, he has instructed many of this generation's top instructors and tournament grand champions--including Jeremy Roadruck, three-time United States Wushu-Kungfu Federation national champion and the 2002 and 2003 Arnold Battle of Columbus Wing Chun grand champion; Mike Mathews, four-time United States Wushu-Kungfu Federation national champion and 2001 Arnold Battle of Columbus Wing Chun grand champion; and Chango Noaks, two-time United States Wushu-Kungfu Federation national champion and the 1998 Second Pan-American kung fu champion. As curator of the Ving Tsun Museum, Meng is one of the only people to have formally trained directly with the grand masters from the earliest form of Wing Chun to the cutting-edge Hung Fa Yi Wing Chun to today's modern Wing Chun families. His school, Meng's Martial Arts, is one of the first schools in the world to offer the martial science of Hung Fa Yi Wing Chun, and it was chosen for the prestigious Top 200 Schools of North America award out of more than 15,000 contenders in 1994. A respected military strategist, tactician, leader, and teacher, retired U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Richard Loewenhagen has dedicated more than 30 years to the study and practice of martial arts. While a commissioned officer in the United States Air Force, he taught Wing Chun kung fu and Shaolin Kam Na to combat and security personnel. He is the founder of Meng's Martial Arts of Arizona, an official Hung Fa Yi Wing Chun school, which was also chosen for the prestigious Top 200 Schools of North America award from more than 19,000 contenders in 2000. Loewenhagen serves as the Ving Tsun Museum's director of west coast affairs and as western regional director of the Hung Fa Yi Wing Chun Federation. He is also an inductee into the Martial Arts Hall of Fame with special recognition as Martial Arts Writer of the Year.

Review :
" """The trio of Gee, Meng, and Loewenhagen has delivered a knock out punch that's sure to shake up the martial world. Their shrewd, analytical approach penetrates the mysticism that obscures modern Wing Chun kung fu to reveal its practical applications for both combat self-defense and living in harmony. A must read for anyone interested in real, authentic kung fu!" Gene Ching Associate Publisher, "Kung Fu Qigong" and KungfuMagazine.com """The authors have devoted many hours to researching the historical and technical aspects of Wing Chun branches. In doing so, they have helped to bring devotees of this art closer together, providing us all with a common focal point in the form. This volume will, no doubt, become a valued reference for many years to come." David Peterson Principal instructor, Melbourne Martial Arts Club From MartialArts.About.com "Overall, this book makes for fascinating reading and is bound to get you thinking." "
