About the Book

On June 14, 2018, when almost at the halfway mark of the 4,208-mile Trans Am Bike Race from Oregon to Virginia, Minnesotan cyclist John Egbers was struck from behind, in broad daylight, by a car driven by Mr Angel Labra. The weather that day was clear, and the road was straight and dry. Three weeks later, John's heart stopped beating. Mr Labra's excuse was that he was distracted by the nearby fields. The Kansas Highway Patrol and the Wichita County Sheriff's Office failed to charge Mr Labra, and Wichita County Attorney Laura Lewis agreed with them that John's death was just a tragic accident. In doing so, she failed to hold the driver accountable for his actions or to deliver justice for John, his wife and their family. That same week two other competitors in the race were also struck from behind by Kansan drivers - Englishman Ash Sharp and American T.C. Cheng. While Ash made a full recovery, T.C. struggles daily with life-changing spinal injuries. In telling their stories, Diminished By One celebrates their love of cycling and the friendships that develop in races like the Trans Am Bike Race. It is also a testament to how the human spirit can triumph over adversity.

About the Author :
Heath Ryan is a publisher and writer, and holds a BA in Economics and History from the University of Toronto. Born in Canada, Heath lived and worked in Jordan, France and the United Kingdom before moving to Australia and becoming a publisher, writing and cycling advocate.Heath is also an ultra-endurance cyclist. Riding as The Dark Knight he was in twentieth position in the 2017 Indian Pacific Wheel Race from Fremantle to Sydney on the day Mike Hall was killed. Since then Heath has competed in and completed three additional ultra-endurance cycling events, setting the fastest unsupported time between Perth and Sydney in March 2018, finishing nineteenth in the Trans Am Bike Race in June 2018 when John Egbers was hit, and placing sixty-ninth in the Transcontinental Race in August of that same year. As the only endurance cyclist to cross three continents, in race mode, in a single calendar year, Heath light-heartedly refers to himself as "the first and only holder of the ultra-endurance triple crown".Heath's current focus is investigative journalism, books that examine social justice, stories that celebrate human achievement, and articles, minimals and other writings that observe and comment on society and behaviour.

Review :
This book tells the story of the injustice my children and I feel every day. Everyone else let us down. You have done an incredible job, Heath, and we will be forever grateful. -Susan Egbers Effective advocacy has to begin at the local level. We can only contribute a small amount individually, but collectively we can change the balance - John Sprock, May 2022
