About the Book

This study is an analysis of recent innovation in ethnographic films during a period of rapid growth and change, written for anthropologists who would pay more systematic attention to films for research or teaching, and for film-makers who would make their films more serviceable to anthropology. The book is a result of lengthy professional involvements with documentary film-making and social anthropology. It concentrates on analysis of a small number of outstanding films made between 1955-85, usually describing the films to give readers a sense of films they may not have seen, or to recapitulate for them the elements of films they may not recall.
