About the Book

Penguin Classics presents Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, adapted for audio and available as a digital download as part of the Penguin English Library series. Read by the actor Jonathan Hyde. 'All human beings, as we meet them, are commingled out of good and evil: and Edward Hyde, alone in the ranks of mankind, was pure evil' Published as a 'shilling shocker', Robert Louis Stevenson's dark psychological fantasy gave birth to the idea of the split personality. The story of respectable Dr Jekyll's strange association with 'damnable young man' Edward Hyde; the hunt through fog-bound London for a killer; and the final revelation of Hyde's true identity is a chilling exploration of humanity's basest capacity for evil. Part of a series of vintage recordings taken from the Penguin Archives. Affordable, collectable, quality productions - perfect for on-the-go listening.

About the Author :
Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) was born in Edinburgh into a family of prominent civil engineers and expected to join the family business building deep-sea lighthouses. He chose instead to be a writer though the trips he made with his father to survey the lighthouses off the Scotland coast inspired some of his tales. In his early twenties he became afflicted with a severe respiratory disease which he suffered from for the rest of his life. Both his parents and his nurse were devout Presbyterians and this exposure to Calvinism, though he was not forced to uphold it, shaped his fascination with the presence of evil and his preoccupation with predestination. In Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde he explores the darker side of the human psyche, and the character of the Master in The Master of Ballantrae (1889) was intended to be 'all I know of the Devil'. In 1879 he moved to California to marry Fanny Osbourne, an America ten years his senior. Together they searched for a climate more kind to his fragile health. In the summer of 1881 he wrote Treasure Island, inspired by an annotated map he drew with his son-in-law while on a family holiday. In 1989 he and his family finally settled in the Samoan Islands where he wrote In the South Seas (1896).
