About the Book

Alone and impoverished, as the prince's dynasty is displaced by the Shah of Iran in the 1970s, she weaves carpets to make money, cares for her children and communes with the ghost of a dead young girl, killed when her shameful pregnancy was discovered by her family, who is buried under a tree in her courtyard. As she grows older, though told that women should remain apolitical, Touba is intrigued by politics and beset by family dramas including abortion, secret marriage, murder and extremism intervene. "Initially published in Iran in 1989, this ground-breaking novel - which juxtaposes reality and mysticism, becoming especially fantastical toward the book's conclusion - was quickly banned by the Islamic Republic." - "Publisher's Weekly" (starred review).

About the Author :
Shahrnush Parsipur has written eleven works of fiction and memoir. A bestseller in Iran, Touba - like many of Parsipur's books - remains banned. Imprisoned by the shah's security agency and the Islamic Republic in turn, the author now lives in Rhode Island, USA.

Review :
'Parsipur...endured jail and torture to preserve her sense of dignity and integrity, and as a writer and innovator... Her protagonists are women whose rebellions are not merely political but existential.' Azar Nafisi, author of Reading Lolita in Tehran Initially published in Iran in 1989, this ground-breaking novel--which juxtaposes reality and mysticism, becoming especially fantastical toward the book's conclusion--was quickly banned by the Islamic Republic...Parsipur makes a stylishly original contribution to modern feminist literature.' Publishers Weekly 'Replete with juxtapositions of mysticism and historical fact, Parsipur's novel is a rewarding and enlightening encapsulation of her country's recent past.' Booklist
