About the Book

Why does the letter ‘M’ stand alone as the title of this book by the author of Silence and For the Birds? The dictionary gives the definition of ‘M’ as the 13th letter of the alphabet, the symbol for 1000, and if you think they fit, they do. Or you may find clues in Cage’s topics, words beginning with M that figure among the author’s concerns: including music, mesostics, Marcel Duchamp and making matters worse. From Buckminster Fuller to Chairman Mao, from Merce Cunningham to mushrooms – here are some of the most poetic, visually rich and syntactically free texts that John Cage ever produced.

About the Author :

  • John Cage was a significant composer and avant-garde cultural figure in 20th-Century America. He was taught piano by Fannie Charles Dillon, started a degree in theology which he abandoned, although his interests in esoteric matters persisted and was later manifested in his "chance music" influenced by the i ching. Early travels in Europe acquainted him with contemporary trends in art and music and when he returned to the USA he pursued a career in music and was mentored by, among others, Arnold Schoenberg. He was a member of the New York School, a collecctive of experimental composers known for their minimalistic approach. This was exemplified by his composition 4'33" (1952), a piece comprising four minutes and thirty-three seconds, where silence and any ambient sound combine to form a unique "performance". He also experimented with remixing existing music and transforming literary texts into electronic music. His private and personal parternship with dancer Merce Cunningham led to many collaborative works including 4'33" where dancers express themselves by holding their positions for the duration of the movements.
