About the Book

The debate about the national curriculum neccessarily involves values: some subjects are excluded and when subjects are given priority over others, this is an expression of values. It has been suggested that in a multi-cultural, multi-faith society there was insufficient agreement on values on which to base a national curriculum for all young people aged 5-16. In this volume, educationists and experts on values, including the Archbishop of Canterbury, discuss the question of values and the curriculum in societies which are changing rapidly and in which disagreements about values are sometimes acrimonious. One of the themes explored is cultural diversity, there is enough agreement about fundamental values to enable a national curriculum to be constructed - but not necessarily the one that now exists. There are discussions of values, problems and issues connected with curriculum planning from a variety of viewpoints.

Table of Contents:
Part 1 The challenge of education in values and the national curriculum in the 21st-century: frameworks for education in values, Jo Cairns, Roy Gardner, Denis Lawton; moral values - the challenge and opportunity, Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr George Carey; values and education - a curriculum for the 21st century, Denis Lawton. Part 2 The context for education in values in school: the cultural context of education in values, Marianne Talbot and Nick Tate; schools, community and the developing values of young adults - towards an ecology of education in values, Jo Cairns; the contribution of schools to pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, Barbara Wintersgill. Part 3 A wider view of education in values: the market-framed university - the new ethics of the game, Robert Cowen; institutional values and personal development, Richard Pring. Part 4 An international perspective on education in values: cultural values, human rights and religion in the curriculum, David Morrison; new wine in renewed wineskins - a Jesuit school now, Paddy Walsh; global perspectives and education in values, Roy Gardner. Part 5 A perspective for the future: how can research into education in values help school practice?, Monica Taylor. Postscript: cuuriculum 2000 - the May 1999 proposals for a revised national curriculum.
