About the Book

Thomas Haytor Mawson (1881-1933) began designing gardens in the 1890s. He forged his distinctive style - solid formality round the house with foreground terraces and balustrades - in the Lake District, where his genius allowed the garden to open out into the landscape. From humble beginnings he was soon the most sought-after garden and landscape designer of the day. He could name crowned heads of Europe as his clients and friends, as well as self-made industrialists such as Lord Leverhulme and Andrew Carnegie. In 1908 he was chosen to design the Peace Gardens at The Hague. Mawson, who was a great teacher and advocate for landscape architecture as a profession, published five editions of The Art and Craft of Garden Making between 1900 and 1926. His Civic Art, reflecting his great interest in the design of towns and public parks, came out in 1911. This is the first full biography of this energetic and prolific landscape architect. It is full of new material and images collected from Mawson's relatives as well as from public and private sources. The author took her camera throughout the United Kingdom and Europe and travelled across Canada to discover the full story of Thomas Mawson's life and work.

About the Author :
Janet Waymark has taught garden history at the Architectural Association and has set up and run courses and seminars at Birkbeck College and the Institute of Historical Research. Her Modern Garden Design (now in paperback) was published in 2003.

Review :
Lavishly illustrated and carefully researched. Cumbria A beautiful book, full of vivid images and infused with infectious admiration for a great artist. Cumbria Life A valuable and well-illustrated work of scholarship, one that goes a long way towards defining an undoubtedly significant, but strangely ungraspable, figure in the history of garden design. Country Life A deeply reseached, well-deserved account of his energetic life and achievements, though the latter are too numerous for them all to be discussed. House & Garden An excellent well researched book with a good index, bibliography and list of commissions. BBC Gardens Illustrated A book no devotee of Mawson should be without and for the uninitiated it is a book which will stimulate a strong desire to find out and discover his gardens for yourself. Reckless Gardener The achievement of this book is in the author's recognition of Mawson's life and his modern ideas of how landscape should be integrated into a city; he was an advocate for green fingers, allowing countryside and fresh air to permeate into city areas... It is a great introduction for students of landscape architecture, town planning, horticulture and architecture, well referenced and lavishly illustrated. Once again, publishers Frances Lincoln are to be congratulated for adding another tour de force to their oeuvre, as is the author for bringing our attention back to a remarkabke man. Garden An extraordinarily detailed and richly illustrated record of Mawson's work both on paper and on the ground... Understanding Mawson helps us to understand his times; he deserves to be remembered for his faults as well as his virtues and in this handsome volume Janet Waymark has served him well. Times Literary Supplement A scholarly and very attractive volume that fills an important gap in modern garden history. Horticulturalist For anyone lucky enough to work in a Mawson garden or for anyone interested in garden history, this book should be top of your list. Professional Gardener In spite of the weath of factual material that she has to deal with, Ms Waymark never loses sight of the need to tell a good story well. The book is also essential reading for anyone interested in the history of garden design and town planning... It corrects a long-standing omission in this field. Hampshire Gardens Trust magazine Dr Waymark's enjoyable book, full of well-researched detail, should ensure that Mawson himself is better appreciated and that no more of his gardens are lost. Historic Gardens Review Waymark has clearly lived with her subject for some years, tracing Mawson's footsteps, camera in hand, in the UK, Europe and Canada. Art Book A thoughtful and comprehensive biography of a important figure in early 20th Century landscape design. Victorian
