About the Book

In 1980 a small operation based in Scotland, founded by Ann Gloag and Brian Souter, was established in order to exploit the new opportunities that were opening up for private coach operators. Stagecoach was born and, over the past quarter of a century, the company has grown to become one of the most important providers of public transport in Britain. With the deregulation and privatisation of the bus industry in the 1980s, this innovative company was able to expand rapidly, acquiring operations throughout the British Isles and, with the privatisation of the railways a decade later, Stagecoach was also able to become one of the leading franchisees of passenger services. Apart from their domestic operations, Stagecoach now has significant interests overseas, stretching as far as Wellington in New Zealand. With the company celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2005, there can be no better time to provide an account of the company's growth and development since the earliest days. Doug Jack, whose earlier books on subjects such as Leyland and Volvo have established him as one of the foremost writers on the subject, has had unparalleled access to the company's principals and records to delve into how Stagecoach was able to become one of the dominant forces in the British passenger transport industry over such as relatively short period. Illustrated predominantly in colour, the book provides readers and enthusiasts with a comprehensive account of the company, its operations and its history. There are few parts of Great Britain that are without some form of service provided by one of Stagecoach's subsidiaries or associate companies. As such, the company has an impact on the lives of millions every working day; this book goes behind the scenes to provide a comprehensive account of one of the country's most important providers of public transport. It will be of interest not only to enthusiasts but to all who make use of Stagecoach's bus and rail services nationwide.
