Table of Contents:
As a group of island nations, the residents of the British Isles have for centuries relied on the sea for both transport and protection. For the former, a network of ferry services grew up both domestically, to provide links between the various islands that comprise the British Isles, and internationally as trade developed between Britain and the continent and as passenger travel increased. From the mid 19th century, with the development of steam power and with the rise of the commercial aspirations of the railway companies (many of which perceived ferry services as an adjunct to their other commercial activities), these services grew in importance, although there remained an undoubted island mentality, as reflected in the headline 'Fog in Channel, Continent Cut Off'. Through much of the 20th century these services, many of which continued to be operated by the railway companies, continued to expand, with huge facilities, such as those at Dover and Harwich, designed to cater for them. Even in the 21st century, after the opening of the Channel Tunnel, considerable traffic still uses the cross-channel ferries and, domestically, the network of routes remains an integral part of the transport infrastructure of the British Isles. In his latest contribution to the successful maritime titles within the 'Glory Days' series, David Williams examines short sea ferry services in the years since the end of World War 2. The period covers the dramatic growth in the ferry business from the age when it remained, as far as passenger traffic was concerned, expensive and exclusive, with ships designed with interiors that would not have been out of place in the grandest country houses, through to the boom years, when the roll-on/roll-off ferry provided a quick and efficient means of moving vast numbers of vehicles and passengers.
