About the Book

This report analyzes the deployment of adaptive basestation antenna arrays for DCS-1800 macrocellular applications. The approach of spacial filtering for interference reduction (SFIR) combined with random frequency hopping has been used in the design of array processing algorithms and performance simulations. It is anticipated that universal mobile telecommunication systems (UMTS) "wide area coverage" services will be an evolution of the second generation GSM/DCS-1800 systems, therefore, the results from analyzing the DCS-1800 system are to some extent expected to be applicable for UMTS. The report, after a brief description of GSM air interface and protocols which have relevance to deployment of adaptive basestation antennas, looks at aspects of radio networks planning and capacity in GSM/DCS-1800. Network strategies and aspects for deployment of SFIR in GSM/DCS-1800 and the potential capacity increase are discussed. The simulation tool is described, including a spatial and temporal multipath propagation model used for performance prediction of the developed array processing algorithms. A more thorough description of the simulation model is given in the appendix. Antenna array optimization technology is also examined. The designed algorithms for downlink transmission and uplink combining are documented. The MUSIC algorithms for DoA estimation is briefly analyzed. Finally, useful conclusions are drawn and recommendations are made for the UMTS air interface. The series of reports results from Technology in Smart Antennas for Universal Advanced Mobile Infrastructure (Part II), a major research project on the application of adaptive antennas (AA) to the next generation of universal mobile telecommunications systems (MTS). The book is part of a four-volume set. Other books include: 97-0077 - "Target Operator Requirements for Adaptive Antennas"; 97-0078 - "Method of Influencing Third Generation Standards"; and 97-0079 - "Field Trial Test Plan".
