About the Book

Yasuhiro Nakasone examines here the paramount issues facing Japan in the 21st century, and considers the strategies for addressing them. He writes here not as a party politician but as a self- avowed nationalist committed to securing reforms that will enable the country to respond to the demands of a new age. This wide-ranging analysis of the Japanese government spares neither public nor private sector. The former Prime Minister argues the necessity for both institutional and social change if the country is to overcome the structural inadequacies and the habits of thought that are the modern legacy of Japan's recent history. Nakasone evaluates the danger and opportunities of the new century and suggests the ways in which Japan must respond in order to maintain a global voice, a position of regional leadership, and domestic vitality and security. He sets out what must be done to revitalise the Japanese economy, restructure the education system and rationalise science and technology policy. Underlying the whole analysis is a focus on the necessity for Japan to adopt a more proactive international role as well as a new national image, and the changes to the constitution and the role of the prime minister that are needed to facilitate that.
