About the Book

If technical skills were all that were required to get ahead, then Black women would be well ahead of the rest in the tech field. However, we often face battles that have nothing to do with our academic performance or professional experience. From our confidence to our hairstyles, Black women and girls are often scrutinized, marginalized, disregarded, and undervalued...until now. In Unapologetically Dope, Dr. Nicki Washington shares her lessons learned from childhood to adulthood on how to remain your most authentic self while still succeeding in a field where less than 1% of all graduates are Black women. Learn to assemble your tribe, recognize the power players and gatekeepers, and play chess instead of checkers, all while never losing yourself and remembering to lift while you climb. Unapologetically Dope provides the tools necessary to make your mark in a field that is in dire need of diverse ideas and innovations. Be audacious. Be unapologetic. Be dope.

About the Author :
Dr. Nicki Washington is the first Black woman to earn a Ph.D. in computer science from North Carolina State University. She also holds a B.S. (Johnson C. Smith University) and M.S. (North Carolina State) in computer science. With over 20 years of experience in computer science, she has held positions at IBM, The Aerospace Corporation, Howard University, and Winthrop University. She is a native of Durham, NC. Brenda Darden Wilkerson is an advocate for access, opportunity, and social justice for underrepresented communities in technology. She currently serves as the President and CEO of AnitaB.org, an organization that connects, inspires, and strives for greater equality for women technologists in business, academia, and government. She founded the original Computer Science for All program, building computer science classes into the curriculum for every student in the Chicago Public Schools, and serving as the inspiration for the Obama administration's national CS4All initiatives.

Review :
The strong truths that so many young Black women technologists and educators of them need to hear are now succinctly encapsulated in the book you have in your hands. Brenda Darden Wilkerson, CEO and President, AnitaB.org
