About the Book

Checking Out of the Hotel Euthanasia is a fictional satirical novel about assisted dying. The Hotel Euthanasia welcomes you through the its splendid doors for a life changing stay. We just can't promise you won't die of laughter before it's time to leave. Checking Out of the Hotel Euthanasia takes us 21 years into the future to tell the bizarre tales of the guests that come for the most decadent death that money can buy, personalized to the customer's self-indulgent desires - however weird those may be. This satirical comedy follows Rab and his crazy Scottish cronies on their adventure to blow up Hotel Euthanasia in revenge for the assisted killing of his parents. Rab, the protagonist, moves from reason to emotion stimulated by loss, anger and a quest for revenge. Along the way we find ourselves tripping over deep-rooted views, bumping into uneasy feelings and discover ourselves lost along the winding path of reality. You may just challenge your preconceptions as you turn down a subterranean twist in the tale. The effective juxtaposition of humour and death, challenges and entertains in a way that engages the reader making a difficult subject accessible. It simply lays it all out bare - the ridiculousness, the sadness, the motives and the defeat, all felt by his characters. "With choice and free will the only thing you can be sure of is uncertainty." The Hotel Euthanasia forces us to question our beliefs in a world full of craziness, where nothing's ever as straightforward as it may seem. "Checking Out of the Hotel Euthanasia", uses humour to explores the various considerations involved in assisted dying including choice, reason, emotion, religion, capitalism, politics, philosophy, morality, relationships, loss and chaos. Iconoclastic humour smashes the idols of conventional wisdom moving the reader to new thought processes. Fun is poked mercilessly at various institutions from communism, anarchy, religion, consumerism and capitalism. Politics is unmasked to reveal vested interests along with the eventual insidious corruption of capitalism. The complexity of relationships are explored through events and pressures on various characters. from the family man with motor neuron disease to the autistic spectrum customer care manager of the Hotel Euthanasia who is detached from life and death. Beliefs and values about the sanctity of life and right to choose are deconstructed in various story lines to reveal moral dilemmas. So, can a fictional comedy about assisted dying be taken seriously? The opportunity to be entertained will certainly make the subject more accessible. Emotionally engage and root for the characters with their various thoughts about death, assisted dying and humanity. Their idiosyncrasies and motivations are explored through absurdity and chaos to realize an explosion of ideas. We are, after all, the animal that laughs!

Review :
Amazingly stimulating book with great characters and intertwined storylines. This book makes you contemplate all the angles of a very controversial subject...and in many ways you couldn't imagine! All the while, the thought provoking subject is mixed with comedic tales with hilarious outcomes. The author has done a phenomenal job with this story and I can't wait to read it again. Hilariously amusing novel with a fast moving, twisting plot and thought-provoking themes. A brilliant debut from a talented author. Wonderfully funny, witty, original novel. It's a long time since I laughed out loud while reading a book but it's something i did very often as I worked my way through this superb novel. Funny is just one aspect of this novel though, it's clever insightful and thought provoking. An amazing mixture of all these aspects, and he balances them all perfectly so that you are entertained and stimulated mentally without it ever seeming contrived. It was recommended by a friend who reviewed it for our local radio station (Oban FM) and her praise of this book was fully deserved Even before I finished I was looking online for other books by Gerard Graham but there don't seem to be any? I'll just need to start at the beginning again. If this is his first novel then we have to hope that it's the first of many. Hilarious and a great twist at the end. He must be wildly read because I pick up traits/styles of storytelling similar to Salman Rushdie and John Irving, not to mention the brilliant Scandinavian author that wrote the Centenarian. I found this book an excellent read. The author presents both sides of the euthanasia debate by using humour to explore the issues and to challenge the assumptions and opinions of the man or woman on the street who may often be ill informed. It makes an important contribution in the search for answers to these questions and I would recommend it. This is a great read, a romp with twists and turns of adventure following the doings of some well drawn Glasgow characters and accompanying humour. However the underlying theme is the serious issue of euthanasia and it certainly makes you think of all the possible aspects without taking any sides. There is a bit of everything here, humour, sensitivity, love and poetry - really very good. What a fantastic read! I laughed out loud many times as I made my way through this book. Very funny but thought provoking too. The Glasgow banter was funny without being twee and I'm feeling that I need another Gerard Graham book to read as I'm now sad that I've finished it. Roll on the next one! What a really great read! I read it in one weekend as I just couldn't put it down. A very humorous look at a very serious topic while taking into consideration the different arguments for and against assisted dying. The variety of characters and their antics made me laugh out loud on various occasions. In general, a very well thought out plot, expertly put together and delivered in my opinion. Would make a great film! Good luck to the author with this project and hopefully more to come! Author Gerard Graham takes a controversial and serious topic and delights the reader with thought provoking scenarios surrounded by comical antidotes that keep you laughing and thinking. Each of his characters are well developed and extremely visual as you make your way through the journey of life at the Hotel Euthanasia. Hoping this new author is busy writing his next book!
