About the Book

Make a Joyful Noise "General anthem for SATB voices, " a cappella;" words based on Psalm 100; music by Gary Alan Smith." Excitement is generated through mixed meters, text driven rhythms, unexpected tonal combinations all united with this beloved psalm of praise. Vocal parts tend to move in duet such as in the opening statement shared between the soprano/tenor and answered by the alto/bass. The second phrase set, starting at measure 10, brings women together in parallel thirds with men interjecting a response. Part assignments are then swapped to complete this section. A quiet 4/4 section at measure 24 humbly acknowledges that the Lord is God. The title phrase returns with renewed energy as the anthem transitions into a statement of thankfulness. The D.C. al coda returns to the opening material concluding with a homophonic run to the final amen. Vocal ranges are well suited to four-part adult ensembles. Notice the divisi in the final four measures as you may need to make adjustments based on your resources. Less experienced ensembles may be challenged by the mixed meter and part writing, such as parallel fourths tonality. The meter is guided by the text, so with some rhythmic attention early in the rehearsal you should be able to achieve success with most adult groups. Performance options include doubling the voices at the keyboard. The anthem is printed closed score making it easy to cover the parts whether in rehearsal or performance. You may shorten the anthem for a call to worship by singing from the beginning and taking the cut to coda on the first time through. The entire anthem may be sung as the Psalter reading for the day, as an expanded call to worship, or as a stand alone anthem, such as the offertory. Appropriate days: services using Psalm 100 and general worship. Age Level 7-9 Difficulty of vocal parts 8 Difficulty of accompaniment N/A
