About the Book

After receiving a call from the newly appointed chief of the New Mexico State Police, ex-Santa Fe chief of detectives Kevin Kerney is thrown into an investigation of a small-town cop-killing no one has been able to solve. His only lead: a homeless schizophrenic's ramblings about rape and an uncharted place called Serpent Gate. Meanwhile, back in Santa Fe, priceless art is stolen from the governor's offices and a beautiful young blonde is murdered in a millionaire's mansion. Kerney follows a trail of clues to Mexico, where he faces off against an old nemesis with powerful government connections. Unwilling to back down, Kerney must use all of his tenacity, raw courage, and knowledge of the criminal mind in a bloody showdown that may cost him his life.

Review :
James Crumley "Hammett and Raymond Chandler Awards Winner, Author of "The Last Good Kiss" As complex and compelling as a desert sunset -- I stayed up all night, reading it straight through. The characters are solidly etched, the plot tightly coiled, and the police procedure outstanding. It's a fine book. Linda Fairstein "Bestselling author of "Final Jeopardy" and "Likely To Die" Michael McGarrity's novels are a perfect blend of riveting action and richly evoked characters, making Santa Fe look more irresistible than ever. "Serpent Gate" is his best -- a real winner. Robert Utley "Former Chief Historian of The National Park Service and author of thirteen books of western American history Michael McGarrity knows New Mexico intimately -- its diverse geography, its multifaceted cultural scene, its politics, and its law-enforcement apparatus. Master of suspenseful, action-packed narrative and vivid characterizations, he fits his plot into a geographical and human setting of extraordinary authenticity. Sarah Lovett "Author of "A Desperate Silence" Michael McGarrity delivers another winner -- "Serpent Gate" is moody, evocative, compelling. Wendy Hornsby "Edgar Award-winning author of "77th Street Requiem" and "A Hard Light" A magnificent tale. Rarely does a writer bring together stunning suspense, fascinating characters, a rich tale, and a splendid evocation of place with the grace and skill that Michael McGarrity delivers in "Serpent Gate". A star to watch. "Booklist"A masterpiece of plot, setting, and character...[to] be savored. "Midwest Book Review"Michael McGarrity is no longer a rising star because he as obviously arrived...."Serpent Gate" is a tremendous southwest who-done-it. "New York Times Book Review"What Kerney understands, and the reader comes to appreciate, is how it all comes down to the land: to the love of it and the need of it and the pure lust of those people who are determined to have a piece of it. "The Dallas Morning News"A must read....A compelling blend of old-fashioned, street-smart detection, tenacity, and modern motivation.... [An] authentic, detailed, and gritty crime novel.
