Excerpt from Die Kämpfe Um Mantua, von der 2. Bis zur 3. Einschließung Durch die Franzosen August-September 1796 Auch in diesem Feldzuge sollten, nach dem Kriegsplan Carnots, die deutschen Armeen unter Jourdan und Moreau(der an die Stelle Pichegrus getreten war) den Hauptschlag führen, die Operationen der italienischen Armee hingegen nur einen sekundären Charakter haben. Im Verlaufe der Ereignisse gelangte aber gerade diese Armee von ltalien durch die un geahnten Erfolge, die sie unter ihrem neuen Feldherrn Napoleon Bonaparte errang, 'zur höchsten Bedeutung. Bonaparte übern'ahm am März 1796 in Nizza das Kom mando; er brauchte nicht erst einen neuen Feldzugsplan zu entwerfen. Schon seit dem Jahre 1794 hatte er sich mit Ent würfen und Plänen für ein offensives Vorgehen der italienischen Armee befaßt. Eine neue Gestaltung') erfuhr sein Kriegsplan 1795 nach den Friedensschlüssen mit Preußen und Spanien. Er ging jetzt davon aus, daß Kräfte frei geworden waren, die es ermöglichten, daß auf italienischem Boden' ein entscheidender Schlag gegen Österreich geführt werde. Die Armee sollte den Feind aus der Riviera vertreiben, Österreich von den Piemon tesen trennen und mit dem König von Sardinien Frieden schließen; hierauf die Lombardei erobern und die Macht des Hauses Österreich in ltalien zerstoren; das Endziel war: "sich der Schluchten von Trient bemächtigen, ins Innere Tirols ein dringen, sich mit der Rheinarmee vereinigen und den Kaiser, den man im Inneren seiner Erbstaaten angegriffen, zwingen, Frieden zu schließen. In dieser Fassung vom Juli 1795 war Bonapartes Feldzugsplan von der Direktorialregierung im Jänner 1796 angenommen worden. Die Weigerung des Ge nerals Scherer, ihn durchzuführen, hatte dessen Demission und die Ernennung Bonapartes zum Chef der Armee von* italien zur Folge gehabt.     A Thrilling But Totally Believable Murder Mystery

    Read this in one evening. I had planned to do other things with my day, but it was impossible to put down. Every time I tried, I was drawn back to it in less than 5 minutes. I sobbed my eyes out the entire last 100 pages. Highly recommend!
