About the Book

Alice Achan was just 13 when the Lord’s Resistance Army first terrorised her village in northern Uganda in 1987. She spent five years on the run from the brutal LRA and then cared for her young nieces after their mother died of AIDS, losing them one by one to the disease. Their deaths plunged her into depression, which only began to lift after she took in an unexpected guest: a pregnant teenage girl, kidnapped and assaulted by the LRA, who had escaped captivity with her toddler. Spurred on by her young friend’s plight, Alice began to house and nurture survivors of the sexual violence that was a trademark of the LRA’s 20-year campaign. Out of this rose the Pader Girls Academy, which Alice saw as a ‘School of Restoration’. It has helped hundreds of girls, many left with babies and HIV as a result of their enslavement. Written in Alice’s powerful yet understated voice, The School of Restoration is a compelling story of hope, forgiveness, redemption and the human capacity to survive and even thrive against the backdrop of war and chaos.

About the Author :
Alice Achan lived a happy, peaceful life in a village in northern Uganda until 1986 when a neighbouring tribe came to steal her family’s cattle – at gunpoint. Aged just 13, Alice was forced to run for her life into the bush with two child relatives, returning home three days later to find her brave father powerless, afraid and defeated. Soon after that awakening to fear, Alice found herself in the middle of a battleground when the Lord’s Resistance Army began to terrorise her village as they fought government forces. The brutal rebel force captured local boys to join the fighting and abducted girls as sex slaves for their commanders. Terrified, Alice and a group of other girls had to hide in the bush each night – for two years – as gunshots flew overhead between the rival groups. Philippa is the author of two published biographies. From the early days of her 30 year career as writer and journalist, she has used her writing skills to tell stories of amazing people, bringing out hidden gems and polishing them for others to share. She has written for prestigious newspapers and magazines in Australia, including the Australian Financial Review, Sydney Morning Herald and SuperFunds Magazine. Through her second career, in international development over two decades, Philippa joined with a number of non-profits to help their supporters share in the experiences from the field. Through communications and video storytelling she enabled those without a voice to share their stories from new platforms. Ratidzo Mambo is an Australian actress and presenter. Having finished a Bachelor in Film and Television, she has been working in the industry for the past four years. She played Adrienne in The Gloaming (2020) and Daphne in Escape from Pretoria (2020) alongside Daniel Radcliffe. Ratidzo has also appeared in several short films and threatre productions for Melbourne Theatre Company and La Mama Threatre.

Review :
‘Beyond inspiring … This story of the redeeming power of educating girls and the restoration of traumatised lives is beautiful. The impact will be immeasurable.’
