About the Book

Dr Gary Leong is a pediatric endocrinologist who specialises in the treatment of children suffering with obesity and diabetes and its complications. A humane and very real person - not just a medical doctor and PhD - Gary loves working with kids and their families to help them work towards and enjoy healthier, happier lives. This book outlines a potentially life-changing program that Dr Gary Leong has developed called the 2020 Family Health Challenge. It encourages you to courageously and honestly confront the underlying reasons for the obesity affecting your child. But it is also about parents and children taking appropriate levels of personal responsibility and then taking action to make a sustainable, manageable change for a better, healthier, active and more purposeful life. This book attempts to solve the problem of what you can do as a parent when you think you have run out of options for a child suffering from obesity. Join the 2020 Family Health Challenge now and learn to Play, Exercise and Eat more together as a family. 2020familyhealthchallenge.com

About the Author :
Dr Gary Leong is a Sydney based Paediatrician, cyclist, and founder of the 2020 Family Health Challenge. The challenge is designed to combat the issues of Family and childhood obesity in an achievable and rewarding way. For the whole decade commencing 2020, he's challenging families everywhere to start revisiting old trends of togetherness in the kitchen, the dining table, the back yard and the playground. His book - Ride to Life launched early May, and is one of Amazon's hot new releases in Child Health. While Gary's research has taken him across the globe, from Sydney, Australia to the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, USA, it is his clinical work with children and their families that inspired his work finding practical ways to help families break the cycle of obesity. Experiencing firsthand the devastating impacts of obesity on families, Gary felt impassioned to find simple and practical ways to support these parents and children to reclaim their lives through sustainable changes that anyone can do, with the right mindset, habits and support. Integrating his personal love of cycling, especially long, challenging rides like Le Tour de France, Gary encourages everyone to get on their bike and stay on it. Gary rides every year for various charities, but has been a great supporter of the Smiling for Smiddy Cancer charity which supports cancer research in melanoma at the Mater Foundation. More recently he has become a board member of the Fab to Fit Foundation which promotes physical activity programs for children from socially disadvantaged communities where childhood obesity is highly prevalent.

Review :
Achieving a healthy weight in our modern world is hard for us all - monumentally so. In this inspiring, heartfelt and deeply practical book, Dr Gary Leong embraces the complexity of the obesity challenge and shows how to harness the power of families to transform their lives and communities by approaching the challenge "just one thing at a time". This has to be the way of the future. We must learn new habits, follow Gary's KINIMS (yes, he makes up words too), and "ride together" to break the cycle of obesity. Stephen J. Simpson, Academic Director, Charles Perkins Centre, University of Sydney and Executive Director, Obesity Australia. Stephen Simpson is also co-author of Eat Like the Animals.
