About the Book

In Egypt during the First World War, Rick, a young Light Horse Trooper, is running from his past-straight into murder. He went to war to find a new life, but the past won't let him go. On Gallipoli, he is seriously wounded, and his best friend killed-and Rick is not sure it was by an enemy bullet. Recovering in hospital in Cairo, he is determined to find out the truth, even if that draws the killer to him. But all he has to go on is an ancient statue and its hieroglyphic spell, and the help of a nurse with her own agenda. Rich with exotic historical detail, supported by a strong plot with many twists and turns, the story is beautifully written. At its heart, it shows that journeys of self-discovery don't always end where we think they might. From the battlefields of World War One to the ancient lore of Egypt, you won't see the ending until it rises out of the ruins. Anyone who has read Elizabeth Peters' Amelia Peabody books, or who loves history, archaeology, ancient Egypt, mystery and murder, will love this debut historical fiction novel by Australian author Warwick Pearson. Be prepared to be transported to an exotic and dangerous time and place.

About the Author :
Warwick Pearson trained as an archaeologist at the University of New England, Australia. He completed an honours degree in the prehistoric archaeology of Cape York, and a doctorate in the historic archaeology of England and Australia. As a consultant archaeologist, Warwick's work took him from the distant prehistoric to recent historic past all over Australia and overseas. Having discovered a love of teaching to undergraduates while completing his doctorate, Warwick has taught ancient and modern history at senior schools in NSW for a quarter of a century and loved every minute of it. The joy of bringing the past to life is one of the driving forces behind his writing. With history and archaeology in his blood, Warwick went back to Macquarie University, Sydney, to complete a Masters of Egyptology. Through this he achieved a lifetime dream of travelling to Egypt to excavate tombs-an experience that has provided a mountain of material for his writing. Warwick says he "loves nothing better than being down a hole in a desert", and that he has "come to love the modern people and culture of Egypt just as much as the ancient." It's not just archaeology and history that are in Warwick's blood. Another passion is learning, and this took him back to his old alma mater to complete another Masters degree, this time in creative writing. Having successfully finished his first novel, Warwick has discovered a new driving force-the love of writing. Warwick has published non-fiction academic work in various fields of history and archaeology, but he says, "nothing has equalled the life-changing joy of discovering and unleashing my creative talent in fictional form." He's sure you will enjoy living in the past with his characters, as much as he enjoyed bringing them to life.

Review :
"Wonderful historic detail, strong plot and beautifully written, with authentic dialogue and delightful turns of phrase." "Wonderful historic detail, strong plot and beautifully written, with authentic dialogue and delightful turns of phrase." "The description of the horrendous conditions the young men fought in the trenches on Gallipoli was harrowing." "Your story is indeed a 'ripping yarn', as you hoped in your author's note, and it did transport the reader to another time and place." "The book has drawn me into the story quickly, which I love in a good mystery. It's got me wanting to keep reading to find out the answers. There were enough plot twists and hairy moments to keep me interested and wanting to keep reading, and the romance was also good. I hope Warwick has something else in the pipeline." "A great read as the story winds through the streets of WW1 Cairo, bringing the reader into the dark world of illegal trade in artefacts and more. Warwick Pearson takes you on a journey filled with historical insight and evocative descriptions of the sights, sounds and smells of Cairo. You feel like you are there." "Sensorially vivid, fast moving, with abundant intrigue and romance and the perfect balance of historical and creative elements. This story would make an excellent script for a movie."
