About the Book

This powerful book emerged from reflections upon life changing insights gained during a Staff Travel Scholarship in 1966, while the author was Chaplain of Carey Baptist Grammar School in Melbourne. These illuminations gave definitive shape to the school's William Carey Chapel, which was opened in 1971, and were road tested in other contexts following Alan Wright's time at Carey. This is the honest story of someone who was both inspired by the ability of the Outward Bound movement to trigger personal and spiritual aspirations in youth and deeply dismayed by the destruction he saw in the war ruins of Stuttgart and Coventry. In the ruins of old Coventry Cathedral he experienced a spiritual vision of the one who is above all, through all in all a presence and hope that is at the heart of all religious beliefs and practices. This vision was bigger than his theological moulds could contain, and sent him on a journey of exploration. Here is a passionate plea for the full development of the educational and spiritual potential of all young people. While the inspiration for this book is drawn from the author's vision expressed in the designing of the Carey Chapel, Wright gives a deeply personal account of an educational and spiritual vision that was expressed in contexts other than Carey. This book will be a wonderful source of inspiration and guidance for the next generation of educators, youth workers, and chaplains.
