About the Book

Bulk Nuts is a trove of relaxedly funny and touching graphic stories, depicting preoccupations, incidents and mysteries that resonate with many of us. From supermarkets, to dance floors, to bus rides and Melbourne nooks, Ord conveys tender and understated takeaways, compelling us to look closely at our own day-to-day realities. A refuge from the flashy maelstrom of modern life, Bulk Nuts shows how odd and humble things can sustain us.

About the Author :

Mandy Ord is a comic artist, illustrator and educator, from Melbourne, Australia. Her comic stories have appeared in a variety of local and international publications, such as Meanjin, The Age, Going Down Swinging, Le Monde Diplomatique with The Goethe Institute, The Suburban Review and The Lifted Brow. Her published books include Rooftops (Finlay Lloyd, 2008), Sensitive Creatures (Allen & Unwin, 2011) and she illustrated Chalk Boy (Allen & Unwin, 2018), a children’s book written by Margaret Wild. Most recently her book, When One Person Dies The Whole World is Over (Brow Books, 2020), was long-listed for The Stella Prize and shortlisted for the Small Press Network Book of the Year.

Review :

"Through verbal economy and graphic surety, this collection of comic strips directs our flow of reading deftly from word to image and back again. Several stories end with the light gravity of a haiku or the hesitancy of e.e. cummings." - Bernard Caleo, Australian Book Review, December 2023

"Ord is an observer who notices the worthwhile things and makes them alive on the page." - Fiona Hardy, Readings, July 2023

"Ord's brush-and-ink drawings and calligraphy hum with energy; her human figures grotesquely exaggerated yet still warm and familiar. There is a cumulative effect to reading these short pieces together: a gentle, meditative state arises, and the small, funny or ambiguous interactions of everyday life take on a deeply beautiful significance." - Clare Millar, The Big Issue, 2023
