About the Book

This volume is the first introduction to all the main philosophical systems of the world, written by a highly successful textbook author. It is the ideal textbook for use on all courses in comparative philosophy, multicultural philosophy, and the history of philosophy.Unique in its breadth, World Philosophies introduces philosophy from the time of Ancient India, China and Greece up to the present day. These philosophical systems are viewed as attempts to provide integrated accounts of the place of human beings within the wider order of things, and to determine in the light of these philosophies the proper conduct of human life.

About the Author :
David E. Cooper is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Durham, having taught previously at the Universities of Oxford, Miami, London and Surrey. He has held many Visiting Professorships, in the USA, UK, South Africa and Europe. His previous books include Philsophy and the Nature of Language (1973), Metaphor (1986), and Existentialism (1990). He also edited the Blackwell Companion to Aesthetics (1992).

Review :
"Cooper provides an example of what the next generation of history of philosophy texts may look like, namely, a severely abbreviated treatment of Western thinkers coupled with new material on Asian and African thinkers." Choice "By opening the door to cross-cultural comparison, Cooper has let in a draught that may blow away the whole house of cards, and uncover the parts of philosophy that the histories never reached." Jonathan Ree, Times Educational Supplement "Cooper is an imaginative philosopher - the author of Metaphor (Blackwell), the best book on its subject. He has written one of the few histories of philosophy that gives nearly equal time to non-western thought, and he has traced the main ideas without getting bogged down in detail or lapsing into vapid generalizations." Lesley Armour, Library Journal, New York
