About the Book

The main features of the third edition of this environmental geography textbook are 22 "windows", each of which describes either a key process (such as desertification, the carbon cycle and sea-level rise) or an illustrative case study (for example, the origins of the Himalayas, the Karst formations of South China, the progress of Hurricane Gilbert in 1988, and the continuing evolution of the Mississippi Delta). The new edition includes a section of colour plates, revised questions and practicals, and a completely updated guide to furthur reading. In 1991, Andrew Goudie was the recipient of the Royal Geographical Society's Gold Medal. The book should be useful to students and undergraduates of geography.

Table of Contents:
Part 1 The global framework: global geological background; global climatic background. Part 2 Major world zones: polar regions; the mid-latitudes; deserts; the tropics. Part 3 Mountain and maritime environments; mountains; coasts. Part 4 Landscapes and ecosystems: plants and animals; tectonic features; slopes; soils and weathering; the hydrological cycle; rivers; cities. Part 5 Conclusion: nature, man and the environment.

About the Author :
Andrew Goudie is the editor and author of many books. In 1991 he was the recipient of the Royal Geographical Society's Gold Medal. He is President of the Geographical Association in 1993-4.

Review :
"This is likely to be a standard work for scholarship and for first-year students for many years ... Professor Goudie has succeeded in making the subject more relevant to human affairs and at the same time has taken into account ideas and knowledge not available to earlier writers ... The book is well written, beautifully illustrated with numerous plates, figures and tables. There is a full index. It must also be added that Professor Goudie is a much travelled man and has been a member of several expeditions and has contributed considerably to their work. He is, therefore, largely writing from personal knowledge of many countries." Geographical Journal "The overall aim of integrating the processes on various scales, of joining together different branches on the subject, and of combining the physical and the human, are amply fulfilled." New Scientist "An excellent primer for an undergraduate course." Scottish Geographical Magazine
