About the Book

Significant changes in the business environment during the 1980s have necessitated a shift to more flexible remuneration strategies. Traditional reward management has found it difficult to recognize or handle the gathering movement for change and in the 1990s this pressure is demanding keener investigation of how and why people are paid. "Total Compensation Management" is a practical guide to a new reward management. The authors have re-examined the "why" of reward management as well as considering the "how", and put the case for a system of the future - total compensation management. This book rests on the belief that measuring employees' value solely by reference to the amount they are paid is illogical as well as inefficient. Reward negotiations frequently founder on the issue of a single, emotive component, yet the emphasis on the value of individual constituents of reward remain. This emphasis seriously weakens the strategic control of senior management over what is often its most sifnificant cost. "Total Compensation Management" shows that the fact that little attention is paid to the cost of human resources is partially due to management's fear that a detailed appraisal would open a Pandora's box of problems. There would be cries from shareholders and employees for more fairness, more equity and greater value. This book argues that ignoring the problem will not make it disappear. It demonstrates the advantages of an honest assessment of any organization's reward management, and reveals an opportunity to reform the system to the benefit of employees, shareholders and employers alike.
