About the Book

An exploration of the Hebrew Bible which is re-emerging from centuries of Christian interpretation. It is a literature from which three major religions have developed - Judaism, Christianity and Islam. This is a methodological introduction to ways of reading the Old Testament books. It tells the story of the creation of the writings that make up the Hebrew Bible, and encourages the reader to understand their message rather than attending to the minutiae of Biblical criticism. Issues which are subjects of scholarly debate are raised and explored, and the hypotheses of scholars tested. This book encourages the evaluation of historical data, the recognition of textual problems and the interpretation of symbolic language.
