About the Book

This text is intended to assist the scaffold designer to prepare designs for unusual access scaffolds and the practical scaffolder to build safe scaffolds in cases which do not warrant the attention of a designer. Only the most elementary knowledge of the theory of structures is assumed. The properties of struts and beams are tabulated so that personnel can apply the data either by way of designing a scaffold or checking a design by others. Part I deals with normal access scaffolds which do not need attention of a designer. Part II deals with special scaffolds which need more skilled attention, site supervision and possibly detailed calculations. Part III deals with some of the administrative requirements of the scaffolding industry. Part IV is a collection of the technical data which designers will need from time to time. Conversion tables are given. Weights of materials and imposed loads are tabulated. A chapter is devoted to wind loads. Throughout the book paragraphs have been inserted under the sub-heading "Hazard" in which attention is drawn to common errors. It is hoped that the designer, the inspector and the scaffold constructor will be alerted to the problems in each type of scaffold and so avoid the pitfalls.
